3 Tips to Improve Your Resume

According to Challenger, Gray, and Christmas, Inc. United States employers reduced 172,017 jobs in February 2025. If you’re among one of those who were laid off, you may be experiencing one of the consequences of unplanned layoff- an unpolished resume because of prior job security. If so, this post is for you.

If you aren’t in the market for a job, it’s still for you. Why? Because it’s much easier to modify your resume incrementally, especially after big wins at work, than to try to remember everything you’ve done two years later, in the middle of a job search, life, or stress.

So let’s jump right in!

1) Quantify your impact

Recruiters want to know that you’re a person that gets results, and I know you are! Show them that by adding figures that show just how much you get done.

Some examples might include:

  • Managed an annual departmental budget of $70,000

  • Led and mentored a team of 5

  • Decreased the customer response rate from 3 average business days to 1

2) Include applicable hard and soft skills

Some people say that you should only include hard skills like apps and/or softwares and languages. But I say include both. In today’s job market many of our employers are using Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to weed out applicants whose resumes don’t match with the keywords in their job description. Most of the jobs that I see include both hard and soft skills in their applications, like the one below. So to increase your chances of getting the green flag from the ATS, you do the same!

Here’s an example of a resume that’s done that well. Alternatively, you could leave certifications in their own section.

3) Tailor your resume to each job you’re applying for

You probably already know this, but I want to remind you to tailor each resume, cover letter, and application to each individual job that you apply for. If you are applying in multiple industries, make sure to have a resume specialized for each industry as well!
